I’m not going to lie to you, a continuous vertical climb is tough but rewarding. On a recent trip to Naples, I climbed Mt Vesuvius, my first volcano! It was one of the highlights of my trip and it wasn’t as difficult as I initially thought I’d be. You don’t need any experience to climb a volcano with a marked trail, just these 3 things!
Good footwear is essential for climbing a volcano! It’s surprisingly rocky and uneven so supporting your ankles is a must! (Flip Flops are a no, yes some people were wearing these!) I prefer hiking boots as they have a good grip but trainers will be okay too!
Climbing uphill is tiring, especially in the sun so drinking plenty of water along the way to keep hydrated is a good idea! Also remember what goes up most come down which requires a completely different set of muscles!
It’s both physically and mentally challenging – regardless of your fitness level, you will feel tired and out of breath and there tends to be no or little barriers so you can’t be afraid of heights or falling. Perseverance is needed and taking rest stops along the climb makes it easier! Be determined to get to the top and you will be rewarded with a pretty stunning view guaranteed!
