A city built on top of a city, the capital of Italy is full of history, buzz and character! The best way to see and experience Rome (or any city) is by foot! Go on a sightseeing walk down narrow cobbled streets; sample local food; buy little gifts and experience the Italian way of life! There is so much to see and do here so I’ll share with you my favourite highlights!
The Colosseum was by far my favourite place to visit, the sheer size and craftsmanship is unbelievable! This is a truly worth a visit for an appreciation of Roman architecture and walking around the stadium you’ll feel like a gladiator! Also the Roman Forums close by are fascinating to walk around!
The Trevi Fountain is one of the oldest fountains in Rome and is often featured in romantic films as it is beautiful. Following Roman tradition, throwing coins over your shoulder – one for safe travels, two for love and three for a wedding is something to remember to do when you visit! All the money is donated to a local charity at the end of each day.
The Pantheon is a church like no other! This old Roman temple has a dome with no roof! It’s a pretty unique experience, standing in a church surrounded by Roman architecture with natural light shining through. It’s a nice place to appreciate the architecture and maybe light a candle!
The Spanish Steps in between the Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinità dei Mont are a great place to take rest and soak up the atmosphere! (Walking around in the sun is tiring!) it’s a nice view and makes a good backdrop for pictures!
Finally, Italy does not disappoint food wise! Plenty of fresh, reasonably priced meals such as pizza, pasta and risotto to feast upon in cute little restaurants. Ice cream is also a must – it comes in so many flavours there is something for everyone! (Gelateria Della Palma has 100+ flavours!)
Rome has plenty to see and do with many squares and gardens showcasing its history- wish I was there for longer!
